A fast-paced intriguing tale of espionage and love
This book reads like the scenes of a good spy film. The action twists and turns, keeping your heart racing throughout. If the action isn't enough to palpitate your heart the beautiful Madison McGuire and her new found love, Terry Randall, should definitely do the trick!

Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States
Published in Hardcover by William s Hein & Co (February, 1994)
Authors: Joseph Story, Bigalow, Melville Madison Bigelow, and United States Constitution
Average review score:

Excellent source for those interested in the Constitution
Joseph Story wrote some of the most important Supreme Court decisions during the early days of the country. This book explores, in detail, his views of the Constitution and it provides a fascinating view of how the Constitution was viewed in the early nineteenth century. Story borrows, liberally at some points, from the federalist papers and early Court opinions to back up his contentions. Each section is very carefully laid out, and the entire book is constructed to explain the Constitution passage by passage. The logical order and a good index make this book essential for Constitutional scholars and provide ease of use for the casual historian. Whether you are looking for the meaning of a single passage in the Constitution or if you just want to get a broad understanding of its meaning as a whole, I highly recommend this book.

The Conquest of a Continent: Of the Expansion of Races in America (Anti-Movements in America)
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (March, 1977)
Author: Madison Grant
Average review score:

Environmentalist waxes Ethnographic
Few people know the name of Madison Grant--yet he holds the distinction of being one of the first of what today we call environmentalists--struggling hard to preserve the rapidly-shrinking wild lands of the Far West.

His other interests--race--were much more predictible--being as he was a man of his times. Oddly enough the situation today is reversed--anyone worth his salt finds environmentalism a worthy cause--while racial issues are fraught with controversy.

To Grant, though, the two issues had a close relation--with only limited room for people if he wa to help preserve his beloved land the question of just who owuld occupy the land was of top importance.

Grant was not necessarily a "racist"--he had as little desire to see non-Anglo-Saxons like Italians etc. in the US despite the fact that they too are "white" and share certain values with the WASPs he endorses.

Needless to say the book is controversial, and his Malthusian presuppositions are typical of his era. Still as an historical piece The Conquest of a Continent is an interesting read, especially for environmentalists. For eg. few of them know that a lot of the "first" greens were none other than the Nazis!

Dolley Madison: Courageous First Lady (Historical American Biographies)
Published in Library Binding by Enslow Publishers, Inc. (January, 1999)
Author: Lynda Pflueger
Average review score:

An enjoyable and accurate biography of this fascinating lady
I was fortunate to be one of the readers for this book before it was published. I found it to be very good and accurate. Maybe as the review above states every detail of Dolley's complex life is not examined but then again this is a book geared for young adults and not meant to be a comprehensive biography.

An Exile

Authors: Madison Jones, Dean Bornstein, and Dean Bernstein
Average review score:

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW:
"A triumph of craftsmanship. Style and content are in complete harmony. The characters are vividly real; their functions, as symbols in the author's larger perceptions, is unforced and organic.... The controlled point is one of the technical joys of the book.... AN EXILE is an intensely Southern book, but like the best of Southern fiction is not self-consciously so. The basic human problem cuts across geography."

Fly Fishing the Madison
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Craig Mathews and Gary LaFontaine
Average review score:

A distillation of decades of experience
Volume three in the oustanding Greycliff "River Books" series, Fly Fishing The Madison offers the aspiring angler a distillation of decades of experience, knowledge, and insight in this "user friendly" guide to fishing Montana's Madison river. Here is a wealth of information on the hatches, seasons, and reaches of the river, along with "tips, tricks & techniques" for unlocking the secrets of an surprisingly diverse river. The authors show how to fish the Madison with dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, as well as pointing out the right moments for each type of fly. Of special interest is Craig Mathews' contributions about fishing the Madison's two "stillwater" areas -- Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake. If you are planning an excursion to the Madison, begin by a thorough reading of Craig Mathews and Gary LaFontaine's Fly Fishing The Madison! Also very highly recommended for the angler's reference shelf are the other volumes in this outstanding series: Fly Fishing The Beaverkill; Fly Fishing The Henry's Fork; and Fly Fishing The Yellowstone In The Park.

Grandmothers of Greenbush: Recipes and Memories of the Old Greenbush Neighborhood
Published in Paperback by Amherst Press (March, 1997)
Author: Catherine Tripalin Murray
Average review score:

A unique and memorable collection
Grandmothers Of Greenbush: Recipes And Memories Of The Old Greenbush Neighborhood 1900-1925 by Catherine Tripalin Murray is a blend of anecdotal history and recipes drawn from the women who lived on a 52-acre plate comprising ten blocks which formed a triangular shaped neighborhood called Greenbush, a Madison, Wisconsin ethnic community. A very nice touch is the inclusion of old b/w photographs of the women, along with a brief biographical description including their birthplace, parentage, siblings, spouse, wedding, and children, accompanied by an anecdotal story of their individual lives. This is paired up with these a recipe drawn from their particular culinary expertise. From Nonna Accardo's Bread; Mama C's Spaghetti Sauce and Meatballs; Salsa Fresca Di Pomidoro a La Puttancesca; and Conchera's Garlic Sauce; to Italian Roast Loin of Pork with Potatoes; Breaded Sirloin Steak; Ida's Delicious Noodle Pudding; and Grandma Urso's Round Steak, Grandmothers Of Greenbush is a unique and memorable collection, a truly fitting culinary tribute, and simply wonderful just browsing through.
